El papa Francisco va a restituir al arzobispo ortodoxo de Atenas tres fragmentos del Partenón, que están conservados en los museos del Vaticano, como un símbolo de la amistad y del diálogo ecuménico, anunció el viernes la Santa Sede.
El sumo pontífice «decidió donar a su beatitud Jerónimo II, arzobispo de Atenas y de toda Grecia, los tres fragmentos de Partenón conservados con cuidado desde hace siglos en las colecciones pontificias y los Museos Vaticanos», indicó la Santa Sede en un comunicado.
El papa argentino, que se reunió con Jerónimo II a finales de 2021 durante su viaje a Grecia, ha hecho del diálogo interreligioso y ecuménico un eje central de su pontificado.

Según Vatican News, la página de información oficial del Vaticano, se trata de tres fragmentos de mármol que representan respectivamente la cabeza de un caballo, el rostro de un joven y el de un señor barbudo. Las tres piezas llegaron a Roma en el siglo XIX.
El Partenón, situado en la Acrópolis de Atenas, está inscrito en el patrimonio cultural de la Unesco. En la Antigüedad Clásica, era un templo consagrado a la diosa Atenea y después fue transformado en una iglesia y luego en una mezquita.
El templo —que ya no es un lugar de culto— fue parcialmente destruido por un bombardeo de los venecianos en 1687 y después fue saqueado, y muchos de sus fragmentos quedaron repartidos por los principales museos del mundo.
Desde principios del siglo XX, Grecia pide oficialmente la restitución, sin éxito, de dos piezas que están en el Museo Británico de Londres, incluyendo un friso de 75 metros, e intenta también que retornen al país otros fragmentos expuestos en otros lugares.
